About My Role
I currently work as an Associate Consultant (AC) at Bain & Company, a management consulting company. In my role, I work with a case team to solve complex business problems for companies across various industries (e.g. consumer products, financial services, telecommunications) and capabilities (e.g. mergers & acquisitions, performance improvement, corporate strategy). As an AC, I am responsible for gathering and analysing data, generating insights and assisting with producing a solution for the client. Outside of my core responsibilities, I am also a part of the 'Asians at Bain' events team and graduate recruiting team.
What do I like most about my role?
I love the variety and learning that my role provides. When applying for internships and graduate roles, I was looking for a role that allowed me to learn about different industries and problems as well as develop various skills. I have been able to strengthen my quantitative skills through managing large Excel models and using data analysis and visualisation software such as Alteryx and Tableau. I have also developed my soft skills through working with people from different backgrounds and presenting to clients and senior leadership. As well as this, my colleagues come from a wide range of backgrounds (e.g. doctors, lawyers, assurance analysts) which makes every day different and unique.
How has my experience at university applied to my role?
My studies have enabled me to become comfortable with technical tools, particularly Excel. This meant that I could focus more on developing my problem-solving and soft skills. Moreover, I have been able to leverage my data analysis skills which are becoming increasingly important as the world becomes more data-driven.
Recommendations I have for students interested in my role
I would encourage students to invest early in their career journey whether this is researching the type of role you would like or understanding the company culture that suits you best. As well as this, I would say that it is important to understand and critically assess your motivations and drivers. For example, I found that I wanted to learn at a challenging, yet comfortable, pace coming out of university and used this as a guiding rock when looking at different roles and companies. Finally, while job searches can be stressful, don't forget to make the most of your university life by trying new things, getting involved with C&S and meeting new people! Best of luck to all students :)
